Who are we?
Dorchester Citizens
for Safe Energy
Dorchester Citizens for Safe Energy (DCSE) is a group of
citizens of Dorchester County, Maryland who are concerned
about the potential impacts of the proposed MAPP (Mid
Atlantic Power Pathway) 500 kv transmission lines that may
potentially run through 27 miles of Dorchester County.

The goal of Dorchester Citizens for Safe Energy is to ensure
that the transmission line is not built until citizen concerns
have been fully resolved and all reasonable alternatives have
been thoroughly evaluated.

The issues we have with building the transmission lines
through Dorchester County are:
  • The detrimental health effects associated with high-voltage
power lines, such as the increased risk for leukemia and other
    cancers
  • The impact on the agriculture and forestry industries, which
are vital to the local economy
  • The impact on the quality of life in a County that has a
traditional way of life and has remained untouched for many
    years
  • The impact on the viewshed that is an important part of our
    lives and our tourism industry
  • The impact on important cultural and historical heritage areas,
such as the Harriet Tubman National Historical Park, the John
Smith park, and other attractions that bring millions of dollars
each year to the local economy
  • The impact to the wetlands that make up so much of our
    County
  • The impact on the Chesapeake Bay where the power line
    crosses into Taylors Island
  • The impact on the many endangered and sensitive wildlife
species, such as Delmarva Fox Squirrel, the Redbelly Water
Snake, the Red-Cockaded Woodpecker, and dozens of other
species who make their homes here
  • The actual need of this area for increased power availability
and whether or not the planned and wanted growth for the
Delmarva region really warrants these types of power lines, or
if we can find other, less-impactive ways to continue to meet
    our energy needs.

We have gone on record repeatedly as not being opposed to
the MAPP project per se. But before supporting MAPP we
want to see proof that:

  • The concern regarding the reliability of electric service is
    genuine;
  • All reasonable solutions have been identified;
  • Each solution has been thoroughly evaluated in a process
    allowing full public participation; and
  • The proposed MAPP transmission line is the best solution.

While we have asked Pepco repeatedly for this proof, it has
NOT been provided as of this date.
